Journalists Kátia Brasil and Elaíze Farias, the founders and directors of Amazônia Real, worked for many years in the mainstream Brazilian press and observed that issues related to the Amazon were of little interest to traditional newsrooms, especially when it came to indigenous peoples, quilombolas, riverine communities, environmental defenders, women, children and adolescents, migrants, among others. To a large extent, only scandals or "exotic" subjects broke through the blockade of newsrooms based locally or many kilometers from the Amazon.
To ensure that traditional communities have access to the media, Amazônia Real created a network of journalists in 2014 with professionals paid through reporting and photography grants in the states of Amazonas, Acre, Amapá, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Rondônia, Roraima, Pará and Tocantins, as well as collaborators in Mato Grosso do Sul, Pernambuco, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The network currently includes more than 40 professionals, including editors, reporters and photographers, developers, designers, social media, columnists, etc.
