Founded in 2011 by women reporters, Pública is Brazil's largest non-profit newsroom specializing in investigative journalism. All of its reports are based on rigorous fact-finding and have as their principle the uncompromising defense of human rights.
Its hard-hitting reports are republished by more than 700 Brazilian and foreign media outlets in 18 different countries - all of Pública's reports can be republished for free under the Creative Commons license. The agency investigates public administration, including all levels of government and legislative houses; the social and environmental impacts of companies, their corruption and anti-transparency practices; the judiciary, its effectiveness, transparency, and fairness; and violence against vulnerable populations in the city and countryside.
As part of its program to promote independent journalism, it provides mentoring for journalists, micro-grants for reporting, discussion events on journalism, and support programs for innovative projects. Throughout its history, it has won 75 awards. Among them, the Gabriel Garcia Márquez, the most important journalism award in Latin America; the Comunique-se Award; the Press Woman Trophy, and the Vladimir Herzog Award. It is the most awarded news agency in Brazil and the first Brazilian outlet to be nominated for the Press Freedom Award by Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
