Austin Vida is an independent nonprofit online website centering the Latino community of Austin, TX, relaunched by journalist Nancy Flores in 2021. Austin Vida was initially founded in 2007 as a Latin promotions music company and then became an entertainment and magazine, which ceased publication in 2015.
The website includes coverage of local culture, arts, and events, community news, and mental health, with a focus on using community engagement and solutions journalism. Austin Vida also sends a weekly newsletter with community news and a monthly Cultura Guide, produces a monthly radio show with Austin’s NPR station, and has hosted in person events, including readings featuring community contributors.
Austin Vida’s revenue streams include grants, audience donations, community partnerships and sponsors, and advertisements. The outlet is a member of the Tiny News Collective, Indiegraf, the Institute for Nonprofit News, and Local Independent Online News Publishers.
Austin Vida was awarded the 2023 Best Latino Media Award from HABLA (Hispanic Business Advocates Business Leaders of Austin) and was a 2023 Finalist, for Product of the Year from LION (Local Independent Online News Publishers Local Journalism Awards), and Flores has received numerous awards in her role as editor and publisher.
