Balkan Insight

Balkan Insight is an English-language media platform managed by the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN), which provides daily news, analytical insights, and investigations on crucial issues in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Turkey, and Greece. Since 2019, Balkan Insight has extended its coverage to Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and Poland. The information is published in Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, Albanian, Greek, and Turkish.

The media outlet has become one of the most comprehensive and independent English news sources in Southern and Eastern Europe. It provides a free-to-access daily news service and premium information, a paid service that offers in-depth analysis, opinions, investigative reports, features, interviews, and profiles on current political and business developments.

Balkan Insight draws from BIRN's pool of correspondents and editors across Europe, ensuring high-quality information edited by a team of native English-language editors. Correspondents address issues including transitional justice, media freedom, foreign influence, radicalisation, corruption, the rule of law, and political crises in the region.

In addition, Balkan Insight annually publishes articles from more than 200 local journalists, mostly previous participants in BIRN's projects: the Balkan Fellowship for Journalistic Excellence, the Balkan Transitional Justice Initiative, and the BIRN Summer School of Investigative Journalism.

Over the years, its investigative team has been nominated and honored numerous times, including the GIJN Global Shining Light Award, the European Press Prize, and the CEI SEEMO Award for Outstanding Merits in Investigative Journalism, as well as multiple national awards for best investigations by independent journalism centres.
