Black Girl in the CLE is a hyperlocal digital platform and podcast dedicated to sharing the stories and experiences of African American women in the Greater Cleveland area. Founded in 2016 by Shana Black, the platform was created to highlight local events and spaces that mainstream media often overlooked, helping Black women connect with their city and community.
While it began as a blog about nightlife and events, Black Girl in the CLE has grown to cover women’s health, relationships, and other topics affecting the lives of Black women in Cleveland. Its mission is to provide a safe, welcoming, and inspiring space where readers can learn about opportunities in the city, feel confident exploring new venues, and engage in activities that might otherwise feel intimidating.
Beyond its digital content, Black Girl in the CLE hosts events to encourage participation and community building, giving readers firsthand experiences and fostering social confidence. The platform addresses challenges unique to its audience, including navigating social spaces as adults, reconnecting with friends beyond family networks, and celebrating the culture and vibrancy of Cleveland from the perspective of Black women.
Through storytelling, events, and thoughtful engagement, Black Girl in the CLE empowers its community while cultivating a deeper sense of belonging in the city
