Black in Jersey is a mission-driven media platform dedicated to amplifying Black voices and perspectives across the state of New Jersey. Rooted in community storytelling, it seeks to place often-overlooked narratives at the center of the media landscape, highlighting the lived experiences, culture, and contributions of Black communities. Its approach combines journalism with documentary-style storytelling, emphasizing authenticity, depth, and human connection.
A key component of its work is coaching and supporting citizen journalists, equipping community members with the tools and guidance needed to tell their own stories. This model not only expands representation but also fosters engagement, dialogue, and a stronger sense of community ownership over local narratives.
Founded by a seasoned journalist, Black in Jersey was created to address the gaps in mainstream media coverage and to redefine what news can look like when it is grounded in community and inclusivity. Its vision reflects a broader commitment to building a more representative and dynamic media ecosystem—one that captures the diversity and richness of New Jersey’s culture while creating space for meaningful conversation and connection.
