Block Club Chicago, a nonprofit news organization, is dedicated to providing reliable, nonpartisan, and essential coverage of Chicago’s diverse neighborhoods.
Block Club Chicago was established by former editors of DNAinfo Chicago after the closure of DNAinfo and Gothamist in November 2017. Following an outpouring of support from residents who missed their local coverage, the team knew they had to resume their work.
With the backing of over 3,000 Kickstarter supporters and generous contributions from Civil, Block Club Chicago assembled a committed team of reporters eager to cover the city's stories. Their mission focuses on delivering meaningful neighborhood stories and expanding their coverage sustainably through reader and donor support.
The name "Block Club" was chosen to reflect their mission of fostering community through grassroots reporting on Chicago's neighborhoods. The history of Chicago’s block clubs, which can be explored further, underscores this commitment to community-building.
