Borderzine

Borderzine is a bilingual nonprofit online news outlet and training program, based in the multimedia journalism program at the University of Texas in El Paso, founded by journalist and professor Zita Arocha in 2008. Borderzine serves as a teaching newsroom in order to provide training and mentorship for students, support the development of reporting, writing and multimedia skills, and help to place students in journalism jobs. Located on the U.S. - Mexico border, Borderzine is also a digital publishing platform providing coverage of essential immigration issues with student contributors from both UT El Paso and partner schools across the U.S. and Mexico. Borderzine covers general news in English and Spanish primarily through a website, weekly email newsletter, and social media channels. The outlet’s coverage includes a wide range of topics including politics, education, technology, sports, health, arts, music, and culture, as well as opinion blogs, essays, reviews, and community information. Bordezine also publishes multimedia projects including photo essays, video, and radio pieces, and the outlet’s reporting includes a number of special topics such as the Covid-19 pandemic. The outlet is known for extensive collaboration, especially for cross-border coverage, and coverage that includes immigration, cross-border issues, and other multicultural topics. Borderzine’s revenue includes grants and audience donations, and the organization is a member of the Institute for Nonprofit News and the cross-border Puente Journalism Collaborative. The outlet also hosts the Dow Jones News Fund Multimedia Training Academy, which provides annual training opportunities to college and university journalism professors, at UT El Paso. The outlet and reporters have won numerous awards from national journalism associations.
