Canada’s National Observer is a digital news organization that focuses predominantly on climate and energy reporting. Founded by Linda Solomon Wood, a journalist, writer and media entrepreneur, in Vancouver in 2015, CNO now has reporters, editors and columnists based across the country covering various beats and levels of government. CNO participates in the Climate Solutions Reporting Project (national), Climate Desk (international) and the Trust Project (international), and has collaborated with other news outlets, including Le Devoir, a Quebec-based newspaper, to share its reporting in French and English. CNO is also known for Civic Spotlight, a data journalism tool it created to help make local government information easily available and searchable online. Its wider coverage includes original news, business and climate solutions reporting, as well as opinion and analysis writing. It also produces podcasts and e-mail newsletters. Canada’s National Observer has won numerous awards, including the Canadian Journalism Foundation’s Climate Solutions Reporting Award (2025), three National Newspaper Awards (2023, 2021, 2017), several Canadian Association of Journalists awards and citations from the Michener Foundation for its public-service journalism. CNO is the lead publication of Observer Media Group, based in Vancouver and Ottawa.
