Central Current is a nonprofit, nonpartisan newsroom dedicated to serving the people of Central New York with free, fact-based journalism. Created in response to the decline of local news and the loss of regional reporting jobs, the organization works to rebuild essential civic information systems by producing accessible, accountability-driven coverage.
Founded in 2022, Central Current focuses on the policies, institutions, and decisions that shape everyday life in the region. Its reporting examines housing, policing, local government, arts, and culture while highlighting the voices and experiences of community members. The newsroom is especially attentive to major regional transformations, including the Micron semiconductor manufacturing project, the Interstate 81 viaduct removal, and the area’s housing challenges.
All reporting is paywall-free and distributed through digital platforms, newsletters, and social media to ensure broad public access. Through investigative collaborations with local and national partners, Central Current has strengthened its regional impact while fostering civic engagement and democratic participation.
The organization has received 16 Syracuse Press Club awards and continues to expand its newsroom to provide deeper coverage of underreported issues. As a community-centered news source, Central Current aims to inform residents, hold institutions accountable, and support a more engaged, equitable, and resilient Central New York.
