Central Desi is a community-driven media platform created to amplify the voices and experiences of New Jersey’s South Asian population. Launched in 2022 as a newsletter, it emerged in response to a clear gap in mainstream media, where coverage of the community was often limited to cultural celebrations or surface-level features. Recognizing the depth and diversity within the Desi diaspora—including individuals with roots in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and the Maldives—Central Desi set out to provide more nuanced, representative storytelling.
The platform covers a wide range of topics, from mental health and identity to politics and social issues, reflecting the complexity of the community it serves. Beyond journalism, Central Desi fosters connection through social media engagement and in-person events, creating opportunities for dialogue and community building.
By prioritizing self-representation and community ownership, Central Desi offers an alternative model for local journalism—one that is participatory, culturally informed, and deeply rooted in lived experience. Its work not only informs but also strengthens connections within the diaspora, positioning it as both a media outlet and a cultural hub for South Asians in New Jersey and beyond.
