Chequeado aims to improve public debate in Argentina by verifiying statements by politicians, media, businessmen, social leaders, and viral misinformation. Chequeado works to revalue the truth and raise the cost of lying. It is a non-partisan and non-profit organization dedicated to verifying public discourse and promoting access to information and open data.
Chequeado checks the statements of politicians, economists, businessmen, public figures, the media and other opinion-forming institutions; and it rates them from “true” to “false” according to their consistency with the facts and data to which they refer. It also checks the viral misinformation circulating on social networks. It is made up of about forty professionals and funds itself from a variety of sources.
In addition to the Media program, it has an Education initiative, focused on Media and Information Literacy, and another on Innovation, in which they develop technology to accelerate production and testing capabilities. It developed a verification method that combines traditional fact-checking and data journalism that was replicated by media outlets in various countries in the region, such as Lupa from Brazil, La Silla Vacía from Colombia, and Animal Político from Mexico, among others.
As part of its work to strengthen fact-checking in the region, Chequeado leads LatamChequea, a network of more than 30 organizations that has carried out collaborative initiatives to fight disinformation. In addition, they organize regular regional events and skills sharing spaces. Among the recognitions it has achieved in more than a decade of activity, the Gabo Innovation Award in 2015, the FRIDA in 2013 and different awards for its research and creative projects stand out.
