The Columbia Missourian, founded in 1908 alongside the Missouri School of Journalism, delivers trusted local news to Columbia and Boone County, Missouri, while serving as a training ground for student journalists. It covers local government, schools, public safety, sports, and community events, publishing both print and digital editions. In August 2025, the Missourian acquired the Boone County Journal, extending its weekly coverage to Ashland and Hartsburg while maintaining the same focus on quality, community-oriented journalism.
The newsroom is managed by experienced faculty editors and staffed by students who gain hands-on experience reporting, photographing, editing, designing pages, and engaging audiences in a professional newsroom environment. Collaborations with university outlets such as KBIA, KOMU 8, Missouri Business Alert, and Vox Magazine broaden coverage and multimedia opportunities.
The Missourian operates under the Missourian Publishing Association, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, but its operations are supported by revenue streams including subscriptions, advertising sales, the endowment, direct donations, and lab fees from the University of Missouri. This hybrid model allows it to combine nonprofit governance with sustainable journalism practices, providing residents with comprehensive local news and students with professional training in digital and print news production.
