The Commons is a nonprofit independent newspaper founded in 2006 and based in southeastern Vermont. Published by Vermont Independent Media, the outlet began as a monthly publication before transitioning to a weekly newspaper schedule in 2010. It was among the first newspapers in the United States to receive recognition from the IRS as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit news organization.
The publication focuses on local journalism, civic discourse, and community engagement across Windham County, Vermont, while also reaching nearby communities in Windsor County, Vermont; Cheshire County, New Hampshire; and Franklin County, Massachusetts. Distributed free of charge through hundreds of regional drop sites, home delivery, email newsletters, and digital platforms, The Commons relies on reader donations, advertising, and foundation support to sustain operations. The newspaper emphasizes inclusive community dialogue and public participation, particularly through its “Voices” section, which features commentary, essays, and perspectives from residents across a range of backgrounds and viewpoints.
