Confidencial Digital is part of a media group run from exile by renowned journalist Carlos Fernando Chamorro. Confidencial is a multimedia digital newspaper with news from Nicaragua, analysis, interviews, investigations, and reports. The media group also includes Esta Semana, an audiovisual news magazine transmitted through the YouTube platform due to the censorship of the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.

At the beginning of 2019, the Ortega-Rosario regime arbitrarily removed the programs Esta Semana and Esta Noche from the television schedule. In December 2018, the regime—accused of serious violations of human rights and freedom of the press and expression—confiscated the newsroom and the main building where the media group operated. Then in May 2021, the regime confiscated a second discreet Esta Semana operating office again. The fierce persecution against the independent press and journalists by the Ortega-Murillo regime has forced more than 150 journalists into exile, including Confidencial’s Chamorro, winner of the 2021 Ortega y Gasset award for his professional career, as well as the 2010 María Moors Cabot Prize from the School of Journalism at Columbia University in the United States.

Confidencial Digital was relaunched on March 1, 2010, as an interactive digital newspaper. The print edition of Confidencial magazine circulated in Nicaragua since July 1996 as a means of information and analysis among a group of subscribers characterized as decision-makers in the government, diplomatic, private sector and civil society spheres.
