Cascade PBS is the primary PBS member station for the Seattle-Tacoma market, with a history stretching back to December 7, 1954, when it first aired as KCTS from the University of Washington campus. Originally a university-owned educational broadcaster, KCTS became a community licensee in 1987. In 2015 it merged with nonprofit news site Crosscut.com to form Cascade Public Media, and in March 2024 both brands unified under the Cascade PBS name, coinciding with a move to a new facility on Seattle's First Hill. Cascade PBS serves more than 100,000 members in Washington State and Canada, delivering national PBS programming alongside local journalism, documentaries, and community-focused content. The organization also operates KYVE in Yakima, extending coverage to central Washington.
