Dallas Examiner

The Dallas Examiner is an independent news outlet founded in 1987 by Fred James Finch, Jr., a notable civil rights attorney, to provide coverage for and to share the perspectives of the African American community in the Dallas and Fort Worth area. Finch Jr. was killed shortly after the paper was founded. The Examiner’s current publisher and CEO is his daughter, Molly Finch Belt, who took over the outlet in 1999, and whose work as a community publisher has been recognized and highlighted by numerous Texas publications. The news outlet publishes a weekly printed newspaper as well as online, via an email newsletter, and is active on social media channels. The Examiner covers general news including local and state politics and government, including a regular series called “Monday Night Politics,” and has hosted local candidates forums and other community events, such as the annual gala, “The Great Conversation.” Coverage also includes local economy and business, health, sports, education, community events, lifestyle, entertainment, and culture, and religion. The outlet also publishes editorials, obituaries, and local commentaries, and maintains a community events calendar. The Examiner’s revenue streams include advertising from local businesses and reader subscriptions, and has also raised money via grants, donations, and crowdfunding for the Dallas Examiner Local News Fund, managed by the Vision Team, an associated 501c3. In 2023, the Examiner received funding from the City of Dallas towards building renovations.
