Dallas Free Press is an independent nonprofit online news outlet, which provides news for underserved neighborhoods in Dallas. with a focus on community engagement, civic information, and solutions journalism. The outlet was founded in 2020 by experienced journalist Keri Mitchell, and was named the “New Publisher of the Year” in 2021 by LION Publishers. The outlet primarily publishes on its website, but also via email newsletters focused on different Dallas neighborhoods, through SMS notifications, and on social media. Dallas Free Press publishes community-centered reporting with a focus on South and West Dallas, and seeks to highlight diverse voices and solutions reporting. The outlet produces guides to civic engagement, maps of community resources, along with explainers and in-depth stories on local issues. Other reporting includes coverage of community information, events, and local government, and Dallas Free Press is part of the Documenters program, which trains local residents to report on local government meetings. The outlet holds “Public Newsroom” events and other initiatives focused on community engagement and participation. Free Press has also partnered with the Dallas Weekly and the Dallas Media Collaborative, and is part of The Trust Project. Dallas Free Press is managed bv a non-profit board, and receives revenue from audience donations and grants.
