Dallas Voice was founded in 1984 as the first source of news focused on the LGBTQ community in the Dallas and North Texas area. The independent for profit newsroom publishes a weekly printed newspaper, which has been continuously printed since its founding, and launched its website in 1996 to provide an additional platform for community news. The current publisher, Leo Cusimano, took over the role in 2013, and became the sole owner in 2017.
Dallas Voice’s coverage includes local and national news, politics and local government, arts and culture, health, economics and business, local features and photography, community information and an events calendar, reviews, opinion, obituaries, and cartoons. The outlet’s reporting is distributed daily through the website, in a weekly newspaper, as well as email newsletters and on social media. Dallas Voice also publishes OUT North Texas, a printed guide to the area, and maintains directories of local businesses and community organizations. Dallas Voice is also known for notable coverage during the AIDS crisis, and has been highlighted as an important part of the area’s LGBTQ history. The outlet’s archives are housed and available to the public at the University of North Texas.
Dallas Voice operates as a for profit and revenue sources include local advertising, print subscriptions, as well as individual reader donations. The outlet also supports a scholarship for LGBTQ journalism students.
