Dallas Weekly is an independent local news outlet serving the Black community in the Dallas area, founded by Tony Davis in 1954, and is considered one of the longest running Black newspapers in North Texas. The outlet currently publishes in print, on their website and social media, hosts an internet radio station, and produces email newsletters three times a week.
Dallas Weekly covers issues important to the area’s Black community, including local and national news, politics, health, sports, culture and entertainment, business, education, community information, and lifestyle stories, and also maintains a community events calendar. Dallas Weekly is part of the national Word in Black network, and has participated in other journalism collaborations including partnering with Dallas Free Press. The newsroom has received local and national recognition for impactful coverage over its history. In 2023, Dallas Weekly launched an internet radio station, which provides a free platform highlighting music from local artists and bands multiple times a week. The outlet has also hosted the annual “Best of Black Dallas” gala, celebrating the accomplishments of local residents, which has included a “Tony Davis Media Mogul” award honoring its founder.
Dallas Weekly’s revenue includes local advertising, subscriptions, and individual donations. The current CEO and publisher is Jessica Washington.
