Denník N is one of the leading news sites in Slovakia, primarily based on a subscription model. While the online business is its main offering, the outlet also publishes a print daily and monthly magazines and books.
The organisation was founded by journalists previously working at the daily newspaper SME. A group of around 50 journalists left SME after it was partially acquired by a group with a history of corruption scandals involving politicians.
The journalists successfully founded the new website and then also added a new daily newspaper - Denník N. N stands for a Slovak word for independent - to emphasise their independence from oligarchic groups and politicians.
Many respected and experienced journalists work for Denník N; the team runs a network of successful podcasts and video interviews, host political debates, organises related events, and publishes books. They are a significant player in political journalism and public discourse in Slovakia. Denník N is seen as a liberal, pro-democratic, pro-European and progressive outlet.
After their success in the Slovak market, the same founders also started a similar project in the Czech Republic - Deník N.
