El Paso Matters

El Paso Matters is an independent nonprofit local news outlet, founded in 2019 by journalist Robert Moore, and covering the area around El Paso, Texas and Ciudad Juarez, MX. The outlet publishes general news on a website, via email newsletter, a podcast, via SMS, and on numerous social media platforms. El Paso Matter’s coverage includes local politics and elections, local economy including reporting on data center development, health and the environment, immigration and border issues, local culture and events, and has produced special series including election guides, those on mental health during Covid-19, the opioid crisis, and mass shootings. The newsroom also publishes actively on social media platforms. El Paso Matters also hosts a number of events to support community engagement and operations, including an annual marathon, a 9.15k, which serves as a fundraiser, as well as an ongoing book club featuring authors. The outlet has won multiple local and national awards for its coverage, including being the first digital and nonprofit newsroom to win the Texas Managing Editors’ “Texas Newsroom of The Year” award in 2025. El Paso Matters’ revenue streams include donations from individual readers, sponsorships for newsletters and events, and the newsroom is a grantee of the American Journalism Project. The outlet has published annual impact reports highlighting impactful coverage as well as audience and revenue growth. Founder Robert Moore is the current CEO, and also serves on the nonprofit board.
