Future Tides is an independent digital news organization founded in 2021 by Cara Kuhlman, a journalist, sailor, and University of Oregon graduate who merged her maritime and media experience to fill a gap she identified in regional coverage a digital-first publication focused on where the Pacific Northwest maritime community is heading, not just its history. Kuhlman developed the venture through the second cohort of CUNY's Entrepreneurial Journalism Creators Program and launched Future Tides to serve a community she felt deserved a modern, forward-looking publication. The outlet covers how people work, play, and live on the region's waterways, with an emphasis on sustainability, equity, and collaboration within the maritime community. Future Tides is guided by a commitment to ethical, independent journalism and acknowledges the waterways it covers as the ancestral homeland of the Indigenous Coast Salish people. In 2023, Future Tides joined the Tiny News Collective, which serves as its nonprofit fiscal sponsor, and received a LION Publishers Sustainability Audit grant of $20,000. The outlet is also funded by Press Forward and a reader membership program called Future Tides Crew.
