Founded in 1990 by Bill and Sue DeCarteret, the Gabriola Sounder is a hyperlocal community news outlet that is now run by married couple Sarah Holmes and Derek Kilbourn, who cover the Gabriola Island community via weekly newspaper and online. The journalists feel the responsibility to provide current and trusted information to islanders about what is happening locally. Their coverage includes local news, as well as information services such as classifieds, local event listings, obituaries, weather forecasts and ferry information. The Gabriola Sounder has won four prizes from the BCYCNA Ma Murray Awards, which recognize the achievements of community newspapers in British Columbia and Yukon, and has been recognized for its success by the local chamber of commerce.
