IndigiNews is an independent, Indigenous-run digital news outlet that is committed to decolonizing journalism and strengthening Indigenous media ecosystems. Based in British Columbia, it focuses on local reporting of news, the arts, first-person stories and investigations on topics such as birth alerts, police accountability and water stories. IndigiNews was founded in 2020 through a collaboration with Discourse Media (now Discourse Community Publishing) and APTN (Aboriginal Peoples Television Network). As of 2025, it was moved to a new non-profit parent organization tâpwêwin media, run by publisher Eden Fineday. According to its website, “tâpwêwin is a Cree term that means “the act of telling the truth” and speaks to the obligation to be a reliable witness and have integrity in one’s storytelling.” IndigiNews has won numerous awards for its reporting, including a National Newspaper Award (2024) and citation (2025), recognition from the Canadian Association of Journalists (2025), the Canadian Online Publishing Awards (2025), and the Jack Webster Awards (2025), which honour excellence in journalism in British Columbia. The media outlet has also collaborated with other independent newsrooms, including The Narwhal and Ricochet Media.
