Founded as a nonprofit to address the decline of local news, it provides in-depth coverage of government, criminal justice, economic development, corporate and public sector malfeasance, immigration, and urban affairs—stories that might otherwise go unreported. The outlet emphasizes rigorous, fact-based reporting, utilizing extensive document review, data analysis, and shoe-leather reporting. Its work is widely distributed via its website and through partnerships with local and national media, including News 7/WKBW, the Niagara Gazette, the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, The Buffalo Challenger, The Intercept, and the Investigative Journalism Bureau. Its credibility has been recognized by NewsGuard, which awarded it a perfect 100/100 rating. Investigative Post’s reporting has prompted legal action, policy changes, resignations, and environmental and public health reforms. Funding comes from charitable donations from local and national foundations, individual supporters, unions, and companies, alongside content partner fees. A registered 501(c)(3) organization and member of the Institute for Nonprofit News, Investigative Post maintains editorial independence while hosting public-facing events such as its At Issue series.
