The Journal 425 (J425) launched to fill the local news void left by the 2018 closure of the Lake Stevens Journal, a legacy community paper that had served the region for over 75 years before being acquired and shut down by private equity. Founded by Kevin Thomas Hulten . J425 is built on the conviction that sustainable, community-supported local journalism can be rebuilt from the ruins of the news desert. The outlet covers local government, schools, crime, politics, and civic affairs for a community that has grown to over 105,000 residents, alongside fearless investigative reporting focused on predatory behavior and abuse of the vulnerable, and award-winning prep sports coverage including the Lake Stevens Vikings.
