Kansas City Defender, The

Founded in 2021 following the 2020 racial justice protests, The Kansas City Defender is a Black-led nonprofit digital newsroom headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri. The organization was created to serve Black communities and younger audiences through journalism designed around community needs rather than traditional newsroom models. Its editorial coverage centers on education, criminal justice, business, technology, arts and culture, civic participation, and issues affecting Black communities across the Midwest. Beyond publishing news, the organization develops public service programs, digital tools, mutual aid initiatives, and civic engagement projects. The Defender follows editorial independence standards consistent with the Institute for Nonprofit News while maintaining transparency about its funding and governance. Its work combines accountability journalism with community-centered reporting and public engagement.
