Kewoulo

Kewoulo is an independent Senegalese news organization based in Dakar that centers its newsroom around investigative reporting. It covers national politics, justice, security, the economy and social issues across Senegal and the wider West African region. The outlet describes itself as one of the region’s first investigation‑led digital newsrooms, and it operates in French for audiences at home and in the diaspora. Beyond text articles, Kewoulo runs Kéwoulo TV, producing news videos, interviews and debate programs such as Survol de l’actualité, which are distributed across social platforms. Kewoulo’s reporting frequently scrutinizes public institutions and powerholders, and the newsroom has operated under sustained legal and political pressure. In 2023, journalist Ndèye Maty Niang (known as Maty Sarr Niang) was detained in connection with her work for Kéwoulo, drawing press‑freedom concern from regional advocates. That same year, director of publication Babacar Touré was repeatedly questioned over defamation allegations; he left the role in March 2025. The organization remains privately owned and editorially assertive. Kewoulo combines exclusives and investigations with daily news, explainers and reader contributions, and its video arm has built a large online following that amplifies accountability stories. Its core purpose is to document events rigorously, surface abuses and corruption, and keep citizens informed on issues that shape public life—from policy decisions and court cases to community safety and education.
