The Land is a nonprofit news organization focused on Cleveland’s neighborhoods and inner-ring suburbs. Launched in early 2020 by founder Lee Chilcote, The Land was created to address gaps in local reporting and provide a community-centered newsroom during a period of disruption in traditional media. Its mission is to produce in-depth, solutions-oriented journalism that informs residents, fosters civic engagement, and holds institutions accountable.
The Land engages residents directly through its Community Journalism program, training and paying over 50 local contributors to report on issues affecting their neighborhoods. Coverage prioritizes economic development, government, community development, health and social equity, and environmental impact, with a focus on marginalized voices including communities of color, low-income residents, and LGBTQ+ communities.
As a nonprofit, The Land operates with full editorial independence and financial transparency. It is supported through individual donations, small grants, underwriters, and fiscal sponsorships such as from the Institute for Nonprofit News. All contributions fund journalism rather than influence coverage, ensuring reporting remains accurate, accountable, and aligned with community needs. By combining professional reporting with community participation, The Land empowers Cleveland residents to understand and shape the future of their neighborhoods.
