The Lexington Observer, founded in 2021 by Lexington residents, is a nonprofit digital newsroom dedicated to reporting on issues affecting the local community. The publication covers topics including education, culture, housing, the economy, and environmental issues, aiming to increase understanding, connection, and civic participation. The newsroom is primarily staffed by volunteers, with oversight from an executive director and a small professional staff, and it mentors student journalists in partnership with Boston University’s Journalism Department and Lexington High School. The Lexington Observer publishes content throughout the week on its website and distributes a weekly newsletter to subscribers. In addition to reporting, the organization participates in and hosts community events, collaborating with local organizations such as the Lexington Lyceum and community festivals. The publication adheres to professional ethics and transparency standards, including those outlined by the Institute for Nonprofit News and Local Independent Online News Publishers. It is also a member of the AP Fund for Journalism State and Local News Program, the BU Local News Network, and the MetroWest News Alliance. Funding comes from tax-deductible donations, sponsorships, and advertising, while maintaining editorial independence.
