Maine Monitor, The

The Maine Monitor is a nonprofit investigative and explanatory journalism organization published by the Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting (MCPIR), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Maine. It was founded in 2009 in response to the decline of local investigative journalism and the loss of reporting capacity across legacy newsrooms in the state. The publication focuses on statewide coverage of Maine government, politics, and public policy, including issues such as education, health care, the environment, the economy, and social services. Its mission is to provide in-depth, nonpartisan reporting that helps citizens understand complex issues and hold public institutions accountable. Since 2020, The Maine Monitor has published its reporting directly through its digital platform, making all content freely accessible without a paywall. Its journalism is also widely republished by newspapers and media outlets across Maine and New England, expanding its reach beyond its own website.
