The idea for the Metrópoles website began in April 2015 when the Veja Brasília newsroom closed down in the federal capital. Businessman Luiz Estevão invited the magazine's special reporter, Lilian Tahan, to be the editorial director of an unnamed news site. The first editorial team consisted of journalists from the now-defunct Veja Brasília, Correio Braziliense, and Jornal de Brasília.
Between May and September of that year, the team of 40 employees developed the editorial guidelines, name, logo, concept, and design of the site. Metrópoles was launched on September 8, 2015, with a focus on covering news from the Federal District and a strong emphasis on providing services.
In 2021, the newsroom grew and moved into three floors of a commercial building in the center of Brasília. The website also underwent an editorial overhaul, hiring columnists such as Guilherme Amado, Igor Gadelha, Leo Dias, Ricardo Noblat, and Rodrigo Rangel. Metrópoles expanded by opening branches in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Goiás, and maintaining a network of affiliate sites across the country that supply the portal with content from their regions.
