Montana Free Press

Montana Free Press is an independent nonprofit newsroom dedicated to producing in-depth public-service journalism that holds power accountable, illuminates critical issues, and empowers Montanans with information that drives positive change. The organization works both independently and in collaboration with other news outlets to produce stories with meaningful impact on local communities and livelihoods. MTFP's coverage spans state politics, environment and public lands, health policy, Indigenous affairs, business and labor, and criminal justice, alongside an MTFP Local initiative that places dedicated reporters in Missoula, Great Falls, and Helena to cover hyperlocal news through community newsletters. The newsroom also produces audio and data journalism, projects-based investigative reporting, and a political newsletter, Capitolized. Montana Free Press was founded in 2016 by veteran investigative and political reporter John S. Adams, formerly the Capital Bureau Chief of the Great Falls Tribune and a USA Today correspondent, who continues to lead the organization as founder and CEO.
