Founded in 1996 by Kenyan immigrant Tom Gitaa, Mshale is the oldest African immigrant-focused newspaper in the Midwest. Its name, which means “Arrow” in Swahili, reflects its mission to “point the way” for the community it serves. Based in Minneapolis, Mshale provides coverage tailored to the African diaspora, including immigration updates, local cultural events, and stories of individual and community achievement that are often overlooked by mainstream media outlets.
The publication has established itself as a vital source of information and connection for African immigrants across Minnesota, reaching readers in the Twin Cities, St. Cloud, and Rochester through free print editions distributed in African-owned businesses, libraries, and community hubs. Its digital platform, Mshale.com, further extends its reach, allowing the publication to engage a broader audience and maintain an active presence online.
In early 2025, Mshale was recognized for its impact when it was selected for a Press Forward Minnesota grant, aimed at strengthening local journalism and closing information gaps for immigrant communities. Over nearly three decades, Mshale has become a trusted platform for news, culture, and civic engagement, empowering the African diaspora and celebrating the contributions of its community.
