The Reader, formerly Nebraska’s only nationally recognized alternative newsmonthly, is now part of the Nebraska Public Media family. Acquired in 2024 along with its sister publication El Perico, The Reader continues its mission to provide news, entertainment, reviews, and community coverage to audiences in and around the Omaha area. Operating online only, the publication features regularly updated content produced by Nebraska Public Media staff and a network of talented freelancers.
Founded in February 1994 by a group of five, including the late John Heaston, The Reader quickly became a staple in Omaha, known for its sharp cultural coverage, event listings, and high-quality reporting. Over its decades of publication, it has produced more than 30,000 stories, including in-depth feature articles, music and arts coverage, and highly anticipated film reviews by Ryan Syrek, as well as a local column from Tim McMahan.
Under Nebraska Public Media, The Reader adheres to strict editorial guidelines, ensuring fair, truthful, and unbiased reporting. Both organizations are committed to transparency, disclosing funding sources and maintaining independent news judgment free from donor influence. By combining its rich history with modern digital reach, The Reader continues to serve as a trusted voice for Omaha’s communities and cultural life.
