Founded in 2014, Reporter.al is the online platform of the Balkan Investigative Journalism Network in Albania - BIRN Albania, a non-profit organisation whose purpose is to promote free, independent media and to inform public opinion on issues related to corruption, impunity, and the state of human rights.
"Our mission is the fight against corruption, impunity and abuse of power," its executive director Kristina Voko says.
According to Voko, BIRN Albania founded Reporter.al in 2014 "to give a voice to civil society and vulnerable groups in Albania because their voices are not heard in the mass media."
Reporter.al provides national coverage; it investigates stories related to organised crime, corruption, abuse of power, and human rights.
The investigative projects of the organisation receive funding from donors such as the Open Society Foundations Albania, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, the Balkan Trust for Democracy, and the National Endowment for Democracy.
