The cooperative RiffReporter comprises over 100 active contributors across five continents. The magazines cover several topics, with titles such as Africa Reporters, Cycling Reporters, AI for All, Animal Reporters, Space Reports, Climate Changes (in German: Klima Wandelt), and The Other Body (in German: Der Andere Körper).

The name RiffReporters outlines why the cooperative exists: riff means reef in English and refers to "a diverse, lively, colourful, collaborative, and at the same time important protection against floods and storms. Reefs are threatened just like the free press in many regions of the world". RiffReporter offers the platform and content management system (CMS) for all members to publish multimedia content independently or collaboratively, according to the agreed ethics code overseen by an ethics council. Its aim is to diversify the information available to the German-speaking public and provide independent journalists with viable income.

RiffReporter is financed through membership - with the cooperative infrastructure self-sustaining through a percentage of revenue from journalist members. Additional developments to the platform - such as RiffLive, a platform bringing together event managers with expert speakers from the group, or the Marketplace, a space for other publishing institutions to buy the rights to specific articles - are financed by partners, such as the Media Innovation Centre Babelsberg or the Google News Initiative respectively. Individual pieces or series are also often cross-financed.

Subscribers can choose solidarity or supporter packages, ranging from eight to 23 euros monthly, or pay for single pieces or magazines, whilst some articles remain free of charge on the website and via the newsletter.

The cooperative and its members have received multiple awards for their work, including the Netzwende-Award in 2017, the Science Journalism Award in 2017, and the Grimme Online Award in the category of Science and Education in 2018.
