Silicon Prairie News is dedicated to connecting Nebraska’s entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem through journalism and community events. Its coverage focuses on technology, entrepreneurship, and business news in Nebraska, with historical reporting that also included Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Minnesota, and Oklahoma, particularly the Omaha–Kansas City–Des Moines region and surrounding communities.
Silicon Prairie News operates as a program of the Nebraska Journalism Trust, a nonprofit organization committed to uncovering truth, amplifying diverse voices, and enriching life across Nebraska. The Trust views accurate and reliable information as a public good and makes all of its journalism freely available to the public under a Creative Commons license. Its long-term goal is to sustain and strengthen high-quality journalism in the state.
The organization began in January 2008, when Jeff Slobotski started documenting visits to creative communities across the United States through his blog, Midwest to Manhattan. Later that year, he partnered with Dusty Davidson to launch Silicon Prairie News, with the goal of highlighting entrepreneurs and creatives in their local communities. Since its founding, Silicon Prairie News has received national recognition from outlets such as CNN, The New York Times, TIME, and Fast Company. In 2009, it launched Big Omaha, an annual conference bringing together founders, investors, and entrepreneurial leaders from across the country.
