Founded by Kelly-Anne Riess in 2021, The Flatlander is a digital news outlet that tells the stories of Prairie people and explores the communities and land they call home. Having grown up in Regina, and dedicated most of her professional life to reporting from the Prairies and up North, Riess was tired of seeing her home communities overlooked by national media and their ever-shrinking local news bureaus. Focused specifically on Saskatchewan and Manitoba, The Flatlander dives deep on stories from both provinces, with original reporting, investigations and explainers. It offers nuanced, fair writing that untangles complex issues and strives to make civic and societal issues more comprehensible.
