The Green Line is an award-winning hyperlocal news outlet focused on helping young and underserved Torontonians thrive in a rapidly changing city. By investigating the way people live, it aims to build a livable city for all.
After two decades in journalism, working with both legacy Canadian institutions and digital American publications, EIC Anita noticed that news media often failed to accurately reflect many communities, especially underrepresented ones. In 2020, she envisioned creating a more inclusive, equitable, and community-driven local outlet in Toronto that would focus on solutions-based reporting. This idea became The Green Line.
The Green Line had a soft launch in October 2021 on Instagram and TikTok, featuring community-driven articles tailored to those platforms. In April 2022, it officially launched TheGreenLine.TO, introducing the Action Journey, an original theory-of-change model that encourages Torontonians to create positive social change in their communities through its journalism.
By embracing ethical and innovative approaches to journalism, The Green Line aims to become a trusted hyperlocal news outlet, serving Torontonians and covering the city as communities see it for decades to come. The vision extends to potentially expanding to other rapidly changing cities across Canada, producing journalism that helps community members thrive on their own terms.
