The Highlands Current

The Highlands Current is a nonprofit community news organization dedicated to providing independent, nonpartisan journalism for the Hudson Highlands region of New York. Published weekly in print and online, the newsroom covers local government, community issues, arts and culture, education and events that shape everyday life in the towns along the Hudson River. The organization began in 2010 as Philipstown.info, a digital news site created to ensure residents had access to balanced reporting about the town of Philipstown in Putnam County and its hamlets, including Cold Spring, Garrison, Nelsonville, North Highlands and Continental Village. In 2012 the initiative expanded to include a print edition, and in 2015 its reporting grew to cover the nearby City of Beacon in Dutchess County. Reflecting this broader regional scope, the publication was renamed The Highlands Current in 2016. Operating as a nonprofit newsroom, The Highlands Current is committed to providing free, accessible journalism that serves the public interest. Its reporting prioritizes credibility, transparency and community engagement, and the newsroom participates in initiatives that promote trust in journalism. Guided by a volunteer board and supported by readers, advertisers and foundations, the publication works to ensure residents across the Hudson Highlands have access to reliable information about their communities.
