Founded in 2018, The Narwhal is a non-profit online magazine that prioritizes evidence-based news and analysis. In March 2021, it became Canada’s first English-language registered journalism organization, which means all of its members and donors receive tax receipts. The Narwhal is also a member of the Institute for Nonprofit News, the founding member of Press Forward (Canada’s association for independent media) and a proud partner of Covering Climate Now (a global journalism project to bring more coverage to climate issues). The outlet’s focus on environmental journalism is grounded in respect for Indigenous knowledge and rights, and foregrounds Indigenous voices. It is committed to building a team that includes and reflects the communities it serves. The Narwhal has also collaborated with many other news outlets to produce journalism, including via an innovative partnership with the Winnipeg Free Press (a Manitoba newspaper) wherein both outlets share a reporter. Since its launch, The Narwhal has been recognized many times for its exceptional work, including by the Michener Awards, the Digital Publishing Awards, the National Newspaper Awards and the Canadian Association of Journalists, among others.
