The Reporting Project is a nonprofit newsroom run by the Denison University Journalism Program, serving Licking County, Ohio, and neighboring areas. It publishes journalism created by students, faculty, and community contributors, with a focus on nonfiction storytelling that reflects the “missing middle” of the United States. Coverage includes people, politics, culture, health, science, environment, and other local issues, aiming to illuminate the complexities of everyday life often overlooked by national media. The organization’s mission is to share stories in multiple formats that deepen understanding of the world they live in and provide a platform for diverse voices. This approach is particularly vital in today’s media landscape, where national corporate outlets can promote simplistic narratives and local news deserts are increasingly common. By highlighting the lived experiences of rural villages, Rust Belt cities, and surrounding communities, The Reporting Project promotes empathy, understanding, and civic engagement. Support for the newsroom comes from the Licking County Foundation, the Hillsdale Fund, the Granville Community Foundation, and numerous local donors, reflecting strong community investment. Through this model, The Reporting Project aims to inform public discourse, uplift underrepresented voices, and sustain local journalism in a region that might otherwise go underreported.
