TjekDet (in English: CheckIt) is a politically independent fact-checking media outlet founded in 2016. It was established to respond to the proliferation of misinformation and disinformation on social media.
The organisation's mission is to strengthen public debate and democratic discussion by checking the facts of politicians' statements and other news organisations' content. It positions itself as a deliverer of facts that works against political polarisation, intensified by fake news and disinformation.
As a non-profit organisation, the revenue source for TjekDet comes from governmental grants. The organisation also provides consultancy services for private corporations and clients. TjekDet knows how crucial transparency is to maintain trust in their impartiality, and, therefore, discloses who funds them and why.
TjekDet aims to be part of a broader effort in Danish society and politics to strengthen digital dannelse (in English: digital literacy), which focuses on educating citizens to think critically about digital media, information, and the infrastructures they interact with daily. This goal is part of the organisation's mission: to critically engage with information spread on the internet.
For a short period, TjekDet published fact-checking stories in Russian to combat Russian disinformation.
