Following a conference that brought together hyperlocal community news outlets across the country in 2015, journalist John Baron and a group of volunteers created an independent media organisation led by the community to ensure that residents of West Leeds had access to news and were involved in the content creation process.
Since it was founded, West Leeds Dispatch, a non-profit social enterprise run by West Leeds Community Media, has put the community first.
Thanks to its "people-powered community newsroom" and the free community reporter course, it has grown to a community of over 60 reporters who have published more than 1,000 articles. A six-week reporting training programme led by John Baron, co-founder and editor of the West Leeds Dispatch, equips people with the skills to report their own stories. The community reporters write their stories and information and receive support in the community newsroom. Local volunteers and businesses have also contributed to the creation of this space.
The media outlet publishes news and events about the communities of Armley, Bramley, Burley, Calverley, Farnley, Farsley, Farsley Celtic, Kirkstall, Pudsey, Rodley, and Wortley, building community engagement and connections through journalism. It also has a printed version of the newspaper, through which it aims to reach those who cannot access the online version.
The organisation's revenues come from grants, advertising, and individual donations.
West Leeds Dispatch is regulated by IMPRESS and is a member of the Independent Community News Network (ICNN).
