Journalists Jeff Israely and Irene Toporkoff founded Worldcrunch, inspired by the French weekly Courrier International and the Italian weekly Internazionale, intending to make it a global, independent, and digital news source. Part of its mission is to “help readers to break out of their respective ‘news bubbles’”.The media outlet was launched in 2011, following Israely's time as a foreign correspondent in Rome and Paris.Worldcrunch covers international news, and translates and adapts it into English. The media outlet started as a news curation site, translating and adapting information published by foreign media outlets in dozens of languages. However, the team now publishes analyses, cross-border articles, and innovative multimedia journalism pieces from more than 40 countries and at least 15 languages. Therefore, it became a window of opportunity to create a network of partner media outlets and journalists willing to share their work in English, a language that gives many people, including non-native English speakers, access to this international information.
