Zerkalo was founded by the team of tut.by, formerly Belarus's largest website. Tut.by was banned and labelled as "extremist" by the Belarusian authorities in the aftermath of the 2020 protests. Most of its leaders are in jail; however, those members who fled Belarus set up Zerkalo to continue tut.by's tradition of factual, accurate, and unbiased journalism. The media outlet focuses on news reporting and long-form human interest stories. Its main focus is domestic, but its coverage is not limited only to Belarus. However, as Zerkalo grows, it is making forays into other genres, such as educational YouTube videos, social-media first formats, and more.
